Notfoundium A MolKraft project

“Element 404” · Nf · half-life 0 s

Found everywhere.
Observed never.

“Notfoundium” is element 404: the element with a half-life of exactly zero seconds, which nonetheless turns up on every broken link on the web.

A discovery of the MolKraft team. Drag the molecule to turn it. Look straight at an atom, and it decays.

Nf₄–O–Nf₄, notfoundium oxide. Hypothetical, like everything else here.

The 404 molecule

Notfoundium oxide, Nf₈O, written Nf₄–O–Nf₄.

Two clusters of four “Notfoundium” atoms, each a perfect tetrahedron, are joined through a single oxygen. Read the formula aloud and it says what it is: four, O, four.

  • Geometry. Two tetrahedra, end to end, with the oxygen holding them apart like a polite host.
  • Bonding. Every Nf–Nf bond is both there and not there. The oxygen is the only atom in the molecule that is sure it exists.
  • Stability. Indefinitely stable while nobody is looking. Decays in zero seconds when observed. Try it above.
  • Synthesis. Type any web address wrong. Yield: one hundred per cent.
  • Molar mass. Not found.

Physics has a cat. Chemistry has this.

Schrödinger's link

In 1935 the physicist Erwin Schrödinger described a thought experiment: a cat sealed in a box with a single radioactive atom, a Geiger counter and a vial of poison. Until someone opens the box, quantum mechanics says the cat is both alive and dead.

“Notfoundium” is chemistry's equivalent, and it needs no cat. Every link is a sealed box. Until you click, the page behind it both exists and does not. Click, and the superposition collapses: either the page you wanted appears, or “Notfoundium” does.

There is one difference. Schrödinger's cat might be alive when the box is opened. A page made of “Notfoundium” is never there when you look, and yet a page telling you so always is. Physics got a paradox. We got a paradox with a link to the home page.

No cats were harmed. The cat would like it known that the box was its idea.
